Heavy Equipment Operator

Operate tracked and wheeled construction equipment like excavators, loaders and graders. Operators move earth and materials and perform site shaping and machine-based tasks.

What You Do Day-to-Day

Perform machine inspections, operate equipment to dig, lift and grade, follow site plans, communicate with ground crews and perform routine maintenance.

Work Environment

Construction sites, roadworks, mines and quarries. Work outdoors, sometimes in remote areas, and conditions vary with weather and project phase.

Physical Demands

Sitting for long periods, operating controls precisely, entering/exiting machines repeatedly and some physical checks and minor maintenance tasks.

Tools and Equipment

Excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, compactors, telehandlers and onboard electronics; must be familiar with machine controls and safety systems.

Who This Trade Fits

Suitable for those who like machinery operation, spatial judgment and responsibility for safe, efficient machine use on dynamic sites.

Training Path in Canada

Operator certification programs, in-house employer training and some provincial certifications; heavy equipment operation is typically trained through colleges or employer programs rather than a standard Red Seal apprenticeship.

What First Year Can Look Like

Hands-on machine familiarization, site safety training, basic trenching and grading tasks under supervision and gaining seat-time on multiple machine types.

Common Entry Routes

Short operator courses, employer trainee programs, or progression from laborer roles with onsite mentoring.

Why Choose This Trade

Good pay for certified operators, consistent demand in construction and resource sectors, and transferable skills between machine types.

Things to Think About

Work outdoors exposed to weather and dust; some remote-site travel and shift work. Certification and seat-time are required to advance.
